Vegan and Vegetarian Food at the 2015 Munich Oktoberfest
The German author Joachim Ringelnatz said that even the most strict vegetarian does not like to chomp on grass (heh). Vegetarians and vegans who are planning to attend the 182. Oktoberfest this year are in luck and will not have to go foraging in the park to chow down on some greens. Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time ever, veggie food will be available at the most popular Munich beer festival! This year, visiting the famous Wiesn as a vegetarian or vegan does not mean you have to do without some delicious food.
For vegetarians, the options are numerous: from fresh radishes to pumpkin or potatoe soup and Obatzda, a Bavarian fermented cheese dish. The fresh pretzels of course taste good alongside all those options. Main courses in the various tents include a new twist on traditional favourites such as vegetable-strudel, spinach-knödel and many pasta dishes. If you still have room for desert, you will find coconut rice pudding and Appel-Strudel, among others.
Vegans will get to enjoy many tasty delights as well. Various Imbiss stalls offer home-made bread with vegan vegetable spreads as well as yummy soups and salads. In the tents, traditional Bavarian fare has been veganized, so you can savour soy-steak in beer sauce or “cheese” Spätzle (like pasta) and fricassee.
The Wiesn-beer is brewed according to the Bavarian purity law and is suitable for vegans. If you prefer wine to beer, there will be something for you to drink as well, just make sure to ask the server in the tent you are visiting.
In the small Wiesn-Tent “Goldener Hahn” run by the Familie Able, vegetarian and vegan fare is featured on a it’s own menu! The larger and more lively “Herzkasperl Festzelt” offers veggie delights as well as lots of different live music (including a New Orleans Brassband).
The decision to include vegan and vegetarian food options at the 2015 Oktoberfest in Munich was an economic one. Last year, more than a third of people questioned at the Wiesn voiced a desire for more veggie-friendly food (source in German). This year, the people’s wish has been the organisers and cooks command. Whether or not the trend towards more veggie-friendly food will continue is up to this year’s visitors. So if you are planning on attending the 2015 Oktoberfest in Munich, make sure to vote with your money, order some yummy veggie food, and help keep vegan and vegetarian fare on the menu for the next 182 Oktoberfests.
